Liposuction is an operation to shape the body contour and silhouette by removing excess fat tissue, which cannot be lost by the help of diet or sport. Therefore, liposuction is not a weight-loss operation and cannot be used in obesity treatment.

During liposuctions, several small few millimeter incisions are made on the body in the necessary areas. The serum is injected through these incisions, later excess fat tissue is sucked from the body with thin cannulas, which are attached to a negative pressure forming machine. Once the excess fat is removed from a region, it does not accumulate in the same region again.

Liposuction can be applied to various regions on the body, some of those are Hips, waist circumference, belly, medial part of legs, the interior part of the knees, back of the legs, ankles, arms, and back. Liposuction can be applied to other regions such as neck and under the chin by using thin cannulas.

Depending on the size of the operational area, and the amount of excess fat to be removed, liposuction can be performed under the local anesthetics, the local anesthetics and sedation (by using sedative),or under the general anesthetics. Therefore, in correlation with the extent of the operation, the time required for the patient to stay in the hospital varies from a couple of hours to 2 days.

Liposuction can be performed with the classical methods or different methods like VASER, with radiofrequency, with laser motor, rotated cannulas.

Amount of the fat removed must always allow the skin to gain its new shape without any sagging. Certain techniques allow more fat removal without causing sagging skin.

Before Liposuction Operation

From 15 days before surgery, aspirin and other blood thinner drugs, Omega-3 capsules, green tea and herbal teas should not be used. Although stopping smoking is not an obligation, but it is recommended. If the patient uses both the birth control pills and smokes, to eliminate any possible complications, it is recommended to stop both 15 days before the surgery.

Duration of the liposuction varies between 20 minutes to 3 hours depending on number and size of the operational area and amount of the fat removed. (Average 1-2 hours)

After Liposuction

During the postoperative period, patients should wear compressive clothing called "liposuction panty" for a month to decrease oedema. Oedema and bruising on the operation site are normal. Bruising disappears on average in 2 weeks, but oedema gradually decreases and disappears within 1-2 months. Depending on the extent of the operation, the patient may return to normal activities within 3-7 days. It is possible to start doing sport 3 weeks after the operation.

The result may not be seen clearly until oedema disappears. In addition, some time is required for the skin to settle. For this reasons, 3-6 months is necessary to see the final result of the liposuction operation.
